When Kickaxe Guitars opened in the summer of 2004, owner Jay Kee had a mission: to bring new and unique product lines into the Calgary market while providing the best possible experience to customers. “There are a lot of musicians who are well aware of these brands, even though they’re not mainstream,” Jay says. “We thought it would be nice for them to have a source to get this kind of gear.”
Kickaxe Guitars carries unique brands like Aria, Breedlove, Dean, Hagstrom and Ovation, as well as Canadian-based brands such as Norman and Godin. They have acoustic, electric and bass guitars as well as a variety of amplifiers. While not everything they carry is exclusive to Kickaxe Guitars, Jay says there are definitely some that are, like Teye, Gadow, Rick Turner, Quebec’s Daddy Mojo Cigar Box guitars and Reverend Guitars from Detroit. “We don’t just sell gear, though,” he says. “We also offer a full suite of lessons for guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, vocals and drums as well as complete instrument and amplifier repairs.”
Jay fixed and did a set-up on my Epiphone Casino (a re-make of the Gibson John Lennon Casino, seen in the Beatles' rooftop concert) and I got it back today. It had some tuning issues, bridge problems and the intonation was a bit off, but now it plays like a dream! I am happy I live so close to this awesome shop in Calgary downtown and I highly recommend them for friendly service and professional guitar expertise.
My vintage Garnet bass amp was fading and sounding funny so I brought it into Kick-Axe Music in Inglewood. To my surprise, the technician, Nick, knew so much about this amp and music equipment in general I knew it would be in good hands. Less than one week later the amp was ready for pickup. I've been plaing on it for days now and it sounds great! Nick showed me what it can do on his bass guitar and shook the very foundations of the building. After all the work I was charged about half of what I expected to pay. If anyone has a guitar or guitar equipment purchase to make, shop here for the best service you'll get in Calgary!
